Dental implants are designed to provide a foundation for replacement teeth that look, feel, and function like natural teeth. The person who has lost teeth regains the ability to eat virtually anything and can smile with confidence, knowing that teeth appear natural and facial contours are preserved. The implants are tiny titanium posts that are placed into the jawbone where teeth are missing. The bone bonds with the titanium, creating a strong foundation for artificial teeth. In addition, implants can help preserve facial structure, preventing the bone deterioration which occurs when teeth are missing. Dental implants can be used for the replacement of a single tooth, multiple teeth, or all teeth. One of the greatest uses of dental implants is to help anchor traditional dentures. Over time, dentures can get loose due to the shrinkage of the jaws. By utilizing dental implants, we can stabilize the dentures by anchoring them to the jawbone. The results are described most often as amazing!
Dental implants are changing the way people live! With them, people are rediscovering the comfort and confidence to eat, speak, laugh, and enjoy life.
Washington DC Dental Implant Evaluation
If, like many others, you feel implant dentistry is the choice for you, we ask that you undergo a dental/radiographic examination and health history. During these consultation visits, your specific needs and considerations will be addressed by Dr. Markowitz. Your questions and concerns are important to us and our team will work with you very closely to help make your procedure comfortable and successful.
Dr. Markowitz surgically places the implant and completes all subsequent restorations allowing his patients to have the entire implant procedure done in one office.
Dental Implant Procedure
Dental implants are titanium anchors, which act as tooth root substitutes. They are surgically placed into the jawbone. Small posts are then attached to the implant. These posts provide stable anchors for artificial replacement teeth.
For most patients, the placement of dental implants involves two surgical procedures. First, implants are placed within your jawbone. For the first three to six months following surgery, the implants are beneath the surface of the gums, gradually bonding with the jawbone.
After the implant has bonded to the jawbone, the second phase begins. The implants will be uncovered through the gums, and we will attach a small healing collar to promote proper healing of the gums. Dr. Markowitz can then start making your new teeth. An impression must be taken. Then posts or attachments can be connected to the implants. The replacement teeth are then made over the posts or attachments. The entire procedure usually takes six to eight months. Most patients do not experience any disruption of their daily life.

Dental Implants Frequently Asked Questions
What are dental implants?
Dental implants can look, feel, and function like natural teeth. The implant itself is a titanium screw that we place in your jaw, and as it fuses with your jawbone, it serves as artificial roots that hold a crown. Over time, the implant integrates with bone through a process called osseointegration, forming a stable and permanent attachment, much like your natural teeth. A complete implant consists of three parts: the screw, the crown, and the abutment which connects the two.
Why would you need a dental implant?
Dental implants are the golden standard for replacing missing teeth. If you’ve lost or need to have one or more teeth extracted, dental implants allow you to eat, laugh, and speak with confidence. Keep in mind that the sooner you get your implants after losing teeth, the better. Your jaw immediately begins to atrophy once a tooth goes missing because it lacks stimulation. In fact, you can lose a quarter of your bone within a year of losing a tooth. However, if you replace your tooth right away, it’s less likely you’ll need a bone graft to build the jaw back up to be able to fully support the new tooth.
What happens before, during, and after dental implant surgery?
The first step in the dental implant process is scheduling a consultation with us. During the treatment planning phase, we gather images and take note of your medical and dental histories. We discuss the various options for treatment and design a plan that fits your budget and meets your oral health goals.
If your tooth needs to be extracted, that happens first. And in some cases, we can place the implant during the same appointment. This typically depends on the state of your jawbone and if it’s lost mass or if it needs to be strengthened to support the implant.
During implant surgery, you will be anesthetized and not feel a thing. We place a titanium screw in your jawbone which takes 1-2 hours. We finish the procedure by covering the implant with the surrounding soft tissue while it fuses with bone over the subsequent 3 months.
Once the fusion is complete, we place an abutment on the implant which connects the final crown restoration to the screw. From start to finish, we implement every step in the implant process, saving you time and money and eliminating multiple appointments with various doctors.
How much does a dental implant cost?
The cost of dental implants seems to be comparable to bridges . When you consider their longevity and their authentic nature in both appearance and function, implants are the most cost-effective choice. The complete cost depends on several factors, so it’s best to come in and meet with us to discuss your case. Our staff is skilled at navigating benefits and ensuring your get the care you deserve.
Does insurance pay for dental implants?
It’s common for some insurance plans to pay for implants. But when you come in, we will help you understand your benefits and determine which steps in the process may be covered.
What are the potential risks, complications, and problems with a dental implant?
We have been placing dental implants for decades, and our success rate matches that of the national average, up to 98%. The risks, similar to those of other minor surgical procedures, are very low and include small, treatable issues, such as infection and damage to adjacent teeth.
