Dental Crowns Washington DC

Most dentistry looks like dentistry. Our goal is to provide dentistry that looks beautiful and natural. We often joke with our patients that our best work goes completely unnoticed. We replace existing crowns and fillings with restorations that look and feel like your natural teeth.

Where damage to your teeth is extreme and looks beyond repair, we can use porcelain or porcelain fused to gold crowns to make your smile appear “as new”. This is an extremely reliable technique for repairing the most severe of dental problems. We are renowned for the quality of our work and the fantastic changes we make for people using this technology. These treatments are used for a long-lasting correction of major dental problems.

How long does it take?
Fitting a crown requires at least two visits to our office. Initially, we will remove decay, shape the tooth, and fit it with an acrylic temporary crown. An impression of the tooth is made and sent to a dental laboratory where your new crown will be custom-crafted.

On the subsequent visit, we will remove the temporary crown, and then fit and adjust the final crown. Finally, we will cement the crown into place and you have a new beautiful-looking tooth.

Key Benefits:

  • Replaces missing tooth structure
  • Offers support to misshapen teeth or badly broken teeth
  • Looks completely natural
  • Can correct severe color discrepancies
  • Fixes “smile” and functional chewing problems

What are the capabilities of crowns?
Crowns are a very reliable solution for major dental problems caused by accidents, diseases, or wear and tear. Major problems can usually be corrected using these techniques. The material used in these repairs is either high-grade porcelain or porcelain bonded to gold. A higher strength of the porcelain and gold materials is recommended to treat the most serious of dental problems. Where accidental damage has occurred, resulting in lost teeth, or where teeth have broken away through excessive wear, or as the result of old fillings breaking, crowns can be used as a long-term solution.

Many people have unexplained pain from filled back teeth, which is usually due to hairline cracks in the chewing part of the tooth. Placing crowns on these teeth relieves the pain and allows a return of full dental function for these teeth. In front teeth, older fillings can both weaken the teeth and cause “appearance” problems due to staining or chipping. Porcelain crowns are suitable in cases where porcelain veneers are not. In teeth with prior root canal treatment, crowns can prevent breakage. Crowns can be used to strengthen a compromised tooth, change the total appearance of a tooth, and be used along with porcelain veneers to complete a smile makeover.

Dental Crown Frequently Asked Questions

What are dental crowns?

Dental crowns are tooth-colored prosthetics used to cover damaged teeth. Also known as caps, crowns often restore a tooth’s strength, shape, function, and appearance after they’ve cracked or broken.

Who is a candidate for dental crowns?

The ideal candidate for a dental crown is a patient with serious tooth damage or pain. A typical candidate for a dental crown needs it to protect a weak tooth, restore a break, cover a filling, hold a bridge in place, or cover an implant, misshapen or discolored tooth, or a root canal. If you are in need of dental restoration, we can craft a cap that will allow you to smile confidently and bite and chew normal and comfortably.

What are the different types of dental crowns?

Crowns can be made of metal, all-resin, and all-ceramic. At our practice, we place all of the crowns mentioned, based on your individual need

What is the cost of a dental crown?

We recommend you come in for an evaluation at which time we can give you an accurate estimate of the cost of your crown. We personalize treatment for each patient, and the cost of each crown depends on a variety of factors, including the material we use to create the crown, its size, and its location.

What happens during the dental crown procedure?

Getting a crown takes about as much time as getting a filling. We simply remove the decay, reduce the tooth in size to prepare for the placement of the crown, take a traditional or digital impression to create the final crown, and place a temporary crown that will protect your tooth and allow it to function at normal capacity until we place your final crown at your next appointment. Sometimes our digital scans allow us to make your crown here in the office, eliminating the need for a temporary crown and follow up appointment.

How do you care for dental crowns after the procedure?

Caring for a crown is like caring for a natural tooth. Simply brush twice and floss once daily, and make sure to keep up on your regularly scheduled cleanings with us.

How long do dental crowns last?

Dental crowns can last up to 20 years, depending on care, location in the mouth, and the materials used for the procedure. We’ve seen them last even longer!

Patient Review by Steve K

I've been coming here since 2003 for cleanings, crowns, replacement tooth, whitening. Many patients are long-timers. It's a practice that prides itself on consistent high quality and professionalism. Extremely trustworthy in diagnosis and proposed and actual treatment. The doctor calls me at home that evening to check on status of any invasive procedure like crowns. You will find that his hand-picked support team of technicians and hygienists reflect the high standards of the practice. And it's just a nice, warm, family-friendly environment to be a patient in (and the pod coffee and refrigerated water in the waiting room is a nice touch). Very highly recommended.
